[FIXED] Service Host Sysmain High Disk Usage Issue on Windows 10 [2022]

If you are a Windows 10 user, you might have run into a problem where your PC or Laptop would have gotten really slow; to the point that you cannot even use it anymore. This is due to the Service Host Sysmain High Disk Usage. In this case, if you decide to check up on your Task Manager, you’d see something like this:

This means that the usage of the disk would be around 100%. Because of this, you would experience extreme lag as well as the fact that your hardware might just stop responding. This can be a real headache and become the reason for missed deadlines or something important that does not get saved.

This issue is mainly because of the Sysmain. This feature ends up using a lot of your hardware’s processing power and hence you are left with none.

If you are someone who has not been through something like this, consider yourself lucky as many users have been reporting this issue for a while now.

In this article, we will cover how to fix the High Disk Usage complication and tell you a little about what it is. If you do not have the time for the complete article, here is a quick summary:

In order to fix Service Host Sysmain High Disk Usage, you need to disable it through the Services Manager or the Registry Editor. Once it has been disabled, the system’s Usage of Disk will come back to normal. You can also Restart your PC so that the issue is resolved.

1. What is Service Host Sysmain?

It was introduced a while ago under the name of SuperFetch as a feature in Windows 10 that was supposed to analyze a user’s pattern of usage. Once done, it would then optimize the processing so those apps and programs would open faster.

Even when it was first introduced, SuperFetch did little to help with the user experience. It was buggy and would cause the same problem of High Disk and CPU usage. Microsoft then pulled this feature out, tweaked it a little, and launched it again. Though, as many users have realized, the tweaking was not enough.

2. Should I Disable Sysmain?

We would suggest that you do disable this feature. Over the course of our experience and many others, SuperFetch has repeatedly caused the problems of either High Disk Use or High CPU usage.

Furthermore, we tested laptops with this service being enabled and disabled. And we did not see any difference in performance. Rather we saw that, because our Disk and CPUs were free more of the time, our experience became much smoother in certain scenarios with the Sysmain being disabled.

This will open a dialogue box in which you will then,

ii) Type “services.msc”

You will then be directed to another window. This window holds all the services that are either being run, disabled, or have been stopped on your windows.

4. Restarting Your PC

Another way to get rid of the Sysmain Disk Use problem is to simply reboot your PC or Laptop. This is not a long-term solution but if you do not have time and want to fix a slow PC, doing this would work as it will restart all the systems.

This process will be much better and quicker for you if you have a Solid State Drive (SSD) as your main storage drive. As then you will not lose as much time rebooting the hardware.

5. Update your Windows

Check to see if there are any updates for Windows present. if so, updating your Windows might help to solve this issue.

This will help as when Microsoft rolls out a new update, they usually fix the bugs. And so, if they have fixed the problem, updating might help you resolve this problem even without you turning this feature completely off.

6. Run System File Checker

System File Checker or SFC is a tool added by Microsoft in Windows that you can use to run a scan throughout your system to find out if any of the files have been corrupted or are missing. Because if there are any, they might be the reason why Sysmain is using High Diskspace.

i) Press “Windows + R” or you can Type “Windows Command Prompt” In Search Bar

ii) In the window that opens, Type “cmd”

7. Change Windows from Balanced to High Performance

The reason for the High percentage of Disk Use by Sys Main could also be because you are not letting your CPU use its maximum potential. This is what happens when you choose Balanced or Power Saving for laptops. You do get better battery life but that is at the cost of your PC’s power.

And so if you could just change your mode from Power Saving/Balanced to Performance, it would help give the processor the extra boost that it needs. This would help with your hardware not being as slow.

8. Performing a Clean Boost

Lastly, the High Disk Use could also be because of a completely third-party app or software. This is because sometimes these apps come with viruses or files that are corrupted. This causes your PC performance to waver as these apps then take extra resources even while only running in the background. To fix this, you could run a Clean Boost.

Follow the steps below:

i) Press “Windows + R” or you can Type “Windows Command Prompt” In Search Bar

ii) In the window that opens, Then Type “msconfig”

Services.msc

iii) Go to the “Services” tab

iv) Uncheck the “Hide all Microsoft Services”

Clean Boost

v) Click the “Disable all Button” and then, Press “OK.”

vi) Then go to “Task Manager” by either Pressing “Control + Alt + Delete” OR by Searching it in the “Search Bar.”

vii) Select the Enabled options and Click on “Disable.”
